Toyota introduced its third-generation Prius at the Detroit Auto Show with an extensively re-engineered hybrid drivetrain. Ninety percent of the Prius's hybrid synergy drive system has been redesigned, with the focus on weight reduction. The lighter components include the transaxle to cut down on torque loss, inverter with direct cooling and smaller motor.
Suzuki has announced no less than five concept cars for the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, which takes place in Japan this November. Four of them are new: the Suzuki Crosshiker, the Suzuki X-Lander, the Suzuki Hustler and the Suzuki Hustler Coupe – the fifth being the Suzuki iV-4 already seen at Frankfurt this year. BMW has announced its cleanest and most efficient 3-series ever – the 316d ES saloon. According to BMW, the 316d emits under 120g/km CO2, and sips fuel at a rate of 62.8mpg, giving it a theoretical range of over 800 miles on a single tank. It might say 316d on the boot badge, but the engine under the bonnet is actually a 2.0-litre diesel.
